When the Appalachian Forest Wars ended, the whites regarded the Indian with loathing and that feeling was carried west with the next generation of pioneers.
The phrase "the only good Indian is a dead one" became a common phrase in every business and pioneer family in the Appalachian - not because of personal experience but because of the experiences of their parents and grandparents passed down to them.
Ironically, virtually all of the notable frontiersmen, Houston, Carson, Bridger, Walker, who came from the Appalachian Border wars, spent considerable periods of their lives living with Indians...hmmm
Most of these men were leaders in the movement west to bring about understanding and renewed respect between the white man and the Indian.
Next Time - Don't cage us in!!
