Don't Cage Us In!

In 1791 the Earl of Dunmore, the last British governor of Virginia had the task of keeping white settlers east of a boundary line running down the crest of the Appalachian Mountains following the French and Indian war policy.

The Effect?  It turned all settlers and colonists against the British and gave the settlers a reason no fight in the Revolutionary War plus made the settlers only that much more eager to settle the frontier.

Lord Dunmore was forced to report that "the law was insufficient in restraining Americans and that to do do will only incite them".

Restlessness became a definitive characteristic of the American pioneer for the next century!
The old bit of psychology trick of telling someone they can't do something...makes them do it all t he more. Should we thank the British for the intense desire to settle the West?

Next time...Walkers move to Tennessee
