In 1822 there was a general depression in the United States economy and money was extremely tight throughout the country, but especially so in Missouri because of the distance to the eastern markets.
The local economy was largely subsistence and barter but people lacked the cash, not only for the land but for the manufactured necessities and luxuries of all kinds.
Perhaps this is why the year 1822 is a mystery in Joe Walker's life - he was busy trying to survive and keep his family afloat to make any great expeditions or contributions to history?
