Most men attempted to live up to the macho image of fighting off the Indians. They appointed military captains to lead the wagon trains, arming and drilling for attack, and posting guards in camps. These men were often disbanded quickly in favor of more of a party atmosphere.
Women folk were not impressed with either the good sense or the physical abilities of their men folk. They didn't believe they could really protect them should an Indian attack become real. Men would look back and be disappointed that they hadn't seen even one Indian on the entire westward trip.
Some women joked about their husband's military might...with bowie knives and pistols. "Hope he doesn't hurt himself".
