Schieffelin, after discovering silver in the hills of Arizona at Tombstone, went on to discover more mines which he shared with his brother, Al and Richard Gird. Richard was a local mine superintendent and with Al and Ed founded mines at Lucky Cuss (can't you just hear the conversation around the campfire..."You are one lucky cuss, Ed!"), along with Grand Central and Contention. The Contention mine was so named because of a disagreement of policy among the men just prior to the discovery of silver there.
Tough Nut mine was discovered by Ed while Al and Richard were building their log cabin homesite...You snooze, you lose? In the end the trio were so rich in prospects and locations that they didn't know which to begin mining first...what a pity!
Next time...the growth of Tombstone.
