Big Nosed Kate Fisher's key to fame was as Doc Holliday's main squeeze. Kate and Doc had met up in Fort Griffen, Texas shortly after which Holliday cut a man's throat during a friendly game of poker.
While Doc was being held in a hotel room, a vigilante mob was gathering in the streets below, shouting for the murderer to hang. Kate decided she needed to assist Doc if he was to avoid the rope, so she set fire to the neighboring livery stable. The mob, now more interested in saving the stable rather than the murderer's death, gave Kate time to enter the hotel brandishing a pair of Colt revolvers from under her skirt and rescued her lover.
Together they galloped off to Dodge City, laughing all the way as Doc later related to Wyatt Earp. Neither Doc nor Kate were ever caught and charged, but you have to hand it to her, she knew how to single-handily freed Doc Holiday from both the police and a lynch mob!
Next time a couple of female gamblers make the list...
