Ephraim Shay, a logger with the looks of Moses (I didn't make that up!), was caught in a winter storm without any way to move his logs and so had to leave them where they fell. Shay vowed it would never happen again - so he designed the geared locomotive with slow speed but tremendous traction. It became the classic logging locomotive across the Pacific Northwest.
