Beginning of Lawlessness in the West

"Ruffins" (tramps and drifters) would invade homes when men were away, frightening women and children with course ways and conduct. They were known as trespassers and petty thefts and were not dealt with as true crimes.
It is believed that Jesse James and gang got there start as ruffins.
