"To See the Elephant" was a period expression meaning to visit the Mother Lode in search of fortune, regardless of whether a person found it or not. In later years the phrase came to mean the experience of any exciting or instructive aspect of the Old West, but in the beginning it was all about seeing the "vision" of the new Wild West!
