The Devastating Prairie Fire

News Flash "1871 - A terrifying autumn prairie fire was aet ablaze from a lone hunter's shot set the dry timber grass afire. The sky was "tall pyramids of flame like writhing, leaping lurid serpents, transforming the sky into broad oceans lit by a blazing sunset" said one eyewitness farmer.

Settlers were reported to be using damp blankets and lit backfires in an attempt to stop the blaze. It is reported that some cattlemen were seen dragging the bloody carcasses of their slaughtered livestock across the flaming grass. Most settlers have taken to hiding out in their soddies and praying. Although their fields are gone, the heavy sod roof is believed to keep them safe"
